The thick glass in the bottom of the golden glass sandwich is normally a turquoise blue crystal glass, but it can also be clear or soft yellow (the chunkier antique gold). The base colour can only be viewed on the back side of the tesserae. It adds a special depth to your work to use the gold tiles flipped.
These days gold leaf smalti also comes in a number of colours. The colour on these golds (blue, red, green etc.) comes from the thin top layer of glass.
Gold leaf smalti
Gold leaf smalti is real gold leaf sandwiched in glass, still hand-made and hand-cut at Orsoni’s in Venice to ancient recipes. You may have seen it used to fabulous effect in Byzantine churches; St. Marks also in Venice has glorious examples.
Needless to say the price of this truly wonderful reflective material is high. However the off cuts from the production, the gold spitzi, are very interesting tesserae at a half the price. Off cuts however will always be subject to availability.
