Mosaic commission by Arendse with South African flora and fauna. Sicis Iridium, Smalti & waterglass, set in metal frame.
South African Table

South African Table by Arendse 2005
2.1x1.0 m, Sicis Iridium, Smalto & Waterglass set in metal frame
Design by unknown South African artist and Arendse

This commission started as a repair job. The client’s original mosaic table was made with low fired ceramic tiles that did not stand for the English winter. It soon proved impossible to repair the table and the client asked Arendse to please start again and remake the table in keeping with the original overall feel using lots of bright colours. She was allowed to adapt the design incorporating more South African flora and fauna and create the new mosaic in her own style. All of a sudden this was a true dream job that Arendse really enjoyed making.

The actual mosaic was made on a temporary base, in this case sticky back plastic, in Arendse’s studio. On the day of the fixing she called on the expertise of mosaic artist Oliver Budd. On the first image you can see how the mosaic is going into the metal base square foot by square foot. On the next image Arendse is gently scraping excess adhesive out of the gaps before grouting. Image three shows the new born table just all cleaned up and done. How long did it take? Well, you are looking about 6 weeks solid work!
